Fuel duty is due to rise by 3 pence in January, raising an
estimated £1.5 billion for the Treasury. Despite MPs passing a motion demanding ministers take action,
Cable insisted that the government had already done “quite a lot” for drivers
and did not have the money for more help.
He told the Daily Telegraph that the top priority was reducing
the budget deficit, adding “the budget position isn't where we can make a lot
of freebies available”.
Bah humbug and all that.
