Lib Dem resorts to cold calling

One Lib Dem at grassroots level who appears a bit worried at the moment is their Assembly candidate for Swansea West. Rob Speht has sent out hundreds of unsolicited e-mails introducing himself to ‘contacts’ he presumably thinks to be potential supporters. The problem is that quite a few live outside the constituency and several claim to have never heard of him.

Speht’s main message is that he has been a resident in Swansea West for 20 years and that he understands “the issues that affect us here”. This will doubtlessly reassure his constituents in Landore ward to the east of the city where he presently serves as their intermittent councillor.

The charmingly named ‘Green Gobbler’, who lives in Gower and forwarded us a copy of Speht’s email, is particularly affronted that the Lib Dem is suggesting that the absence of an official Green candidate means Swansea West voters should “consider lending me your vote this time”.

GG says a complaint has been sent to Ofcom and disputes comments in the message accompanying the email (in incredibly small print) which states it has been sent “because you have contacted us at some point”.

Update: We are unable to confirm if Carl Harris, who also received an email from Speht is a resident of Swansea West constituency. All we can tell you is that Mr Harris is apparently the Plaid candidate.

Peter Black has a letter in tonight's EP slagging off the Greens for suggesting that Speht is stealing their clothes. The hilarious thing is that Speht's website displays the original attack thinking that it is an endorsement. The point was clearly lost on him - although it's understandable as Greens are note noted for their use of satire.
